Follow these simple steps to add a PDF to WordPress.

You may want to add a PDF file to a page or post.  The way it works is you load the PDF first into the media library and then insert it as a link on your page or post.

Then when your visitor clicks on the link it will open up the PDF into a new window for them to read.  Simple!!

How to add a pdf to WordPressadd-a-pdf

  • Login to WordPress
  • Go to the Media Library
  • Click Add New
  • Click Select Files
  • Browse for the pdf file on your computer
  • Click Open
  • Wait for the pdf to load
  • Once the pdf is loaded into the Media Library > Click Edit
  • Scroll to the File URL:
  • Select the entire URL
  • Right Click to copy the URL
This will be our hyperlink for the text in the page/post
  • Go to All Pages
  • Edit the page you want to add the PDF to (or create a new page)
  • Type or select the text you want the visitor to click on to take them to the pdf file
  • Click the Insert/Edit Link icon in the visual editor for the page/post
  • Paste the hyperlink you copied previously into the URL field
  • Select the checkbox > Open link in a new window/tab
  • Add a Title
This text will pop up when the user scrolls over the link
  • Click Add Link
  • Update your page
  • Go to your website in the browser and check the pdf works by clicking on it
  • The pdf should open in a new browser window

What if my PDF won’t load to the Media Library?

Follow these steps to load the pdf to the server.  You will need access to your server via FTP.
Download FileZilla and add your FTP details to login to your server.  Your FTP details will be in your welcome email from your hosting company.  See our tutorial on FileZilla

  • If the pdf doesn’t load into WordPress then the file size may be too big
  • Try optimising or reducing the file size of the pdf in Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat
  • If it still won’t load you will have to load it up with an FTP progam like Filezilla to your server
  • Once you have installed FileZilla and entered in your details to access your server
  • Open the www folder
  • You will see all the WordPress files and folders
  • Go into wp-content
  • Go into uploads
  • Open the main folder e.g. 2013
  • Open the next folder  – usually it will be a number for e.g. 01
  • Once inside the folder you should see other images that are in your WordPress site
  • Go to the left side of FileZilla and locate your pdf file
  • Drag the pdf from the left side of FileZilla to the right side (your server) into the images folder
  • It may take a while to load
  • If it won’t load you will have to contact your hosting to add more memory so you can add bigger files to your server
  • Once loaded > right click on the right side of FileZilla > click Refresh
  • You should see the pdf in amongst all the images
  • Look up at the Remote site: field  – just above your images in FileZilla (right side)
  • This is the path or location of where your pdf is stored on your server
  • E.g. /www/wp-content/uploads/2013/03
  • Write this location down in a text editor so you can use this for the hyperlink
  • Go back to the WordPress admin and the page where you are inserting the pdf link
  • Select the text
  • Click the Insert/Edit Link icon in the visual editor for the page/post
  • Type in the full URL of the location on the server of where your pdf is stored
    For e.g. https://www.your-website.com/wp-content/uploads/01/name-of-pdf.pdf

If all else fails contact your hosting to ask them why you can’t load the pdf and they will do something behind the scenes to help you!
