Learn how to export WordPress content

You can export WordPress pages and posts easily with the export tool inside the WordPress admin.The export tool allows you to export WordPress content – making it easier to backup pages and posts, text and images.  So if something happens to the content in your pages and posts, you can easily import the exported file to fix the issue.

The export WordPress tool also allows you to move WordPress content easily to either a new domain or hosting service.

The steps to export WordPress content

Exporting WordPress content may include; posts, pages, comments, custom fields, custom menus and tags.

Export WordPress Tool

  • Go to Tools
  • Click on Export
  • Click on WordPress – this will prompt you to install exporter
  • Click on Install Now
  • Click on Activate Plugin & Run Exporter
  • Select All content
  • Click Download Export File
  • Save the file in a safe place on your computer; just in case you ever need to use it to restore your content

To import the content or file back into WordPress

Install the WordPress importer to import posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags from a WordPress export file.

  • Go to Tools
  • Click on Import
  • Click on WordPress
  • Click on Install Now
  • Click on Activate Plugin & Run Importer
  • Click on Browse
  • Select the file you exported previously to your computer (XML file)
  • Click > Upload file and import
  • Go to Import author: From “or assign posts to an existing user:”
  • Select your Name
  • Check > Download and import file attachments
  • Click > Submit

Note: Some things may not always import properly, so make sure you check your website.

If you moving this file from one site to another you may need to check the custom menu settings, widgets, reading settings, css and possibly plugins.
